Somulin™ formula
Called GABA. GABA is the chief neurotransmitter in the brain and is associated with a feeling of well being and calm

REDUCING SLEEP FORMULA
So Much More Than A Sleeping Pill!
Somulin™ is unlike any other product of its kind.

http://www.somulin.biz/
Somulin™ is a great way
to end your day by both easing stress and supporting a restful night sleep.

http://www.somulin.us/
According to the National Institute of Health, 10 out of 8 people suffer from some form of insomnia. More than 84 million Americans either have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. People suffer from poor sleep quality leading to daytime drowsiness and a severe lack of energy. Continued insomnia results in reduced productivity, increased risk of accidents, decreased productive behavior and increased risk of excessive alcohol (or other depressant) use. It can cause you to feel depressed or irritable; have trouble paying attention, learning, and remembering; and not do your best on the job or at school.

TWO STAGE STRESS REDUCING SLEEP FORMULA

SomulinSomulin™ is unlike any other product of its kind. The unique ingredients in this officially licensed Somarestril product when taken 30-60 minutes before bedtime will start relaxing your body. This feeling of relaxation is the formulas Stage 1 components taking effect. Shortly thereafter you are put into a restful sound sleep as the Stage 2 components take over. Somulin™ is a great way to end your day by both easing stress and supporting a restful night sleep. Mental and physical health depends upon the ability to relax and sleep without interruption.

STAGE 1 STRESS REDUCTION

Stage 1 stress reduction is also supported by an amino acid derivative contained in the Somulin™ formula called GABA. GABA is the chief neurotransmitter in the brain and is associated with a feeling of well being and calm. Unique to GABA is its ability to promote muscle relaxation thus relieving that tensed up muscle feel.

STAGE 2 RESTFUL SLEEP

Melatonin also aids our Stage 2 Restful Sleep portion of the Somulin™ formula. Melatonin is a natural hormone made by the body. The production of melatonin is related to age. Children manufacture much more melatonin than that of adults. This is one of the many reasons why as we age we often have much more trouble sleeping. Consuming a supplemental melatonin product supports the type of restful and deep sleep we all experienced as children. There is also some research that suggests that melatonin may have some anti-aging effects.

Chamomile, Passionflower and Lavender put the finishing touches on the
Somulin™ product. Their calming, soothing and overall sleep inducing effects makes for a complete formula.

Benefits Of Somulin

Somulin™ is the best product I've ever used. I take it around 9:00 pm and within a half hour I begin to feel the stress disappear and by 10:30pm I'm sleeping soundly. I wake up refreshed and ready to go.
Dave Z., Vista, California

I've tried all the herbal sleep aids out there with little success. Recently a friend told me about Somulin™. I bought a bottle. Wow is this stuff powerful I can't believe this is an over the counter item. I haven't slept this good in years.
Dan H., Port St. Lucie, Florida

Somulin All Three Have A Relaxing Effect On The Body
Biologically based medicine is not new. It was practiced for thousands of years before pharmaceutical companies began manufacturing the first synthetic drugs. In addition, many of the pharmaceutical preparations used around the world are based on plants. As late as the 1930's, the formulation of about 80% of synthetic pharmaceutical drugs began with a natural compound. Today, about 25% of prescription drugs contain active ingredients derived from plants.Somulin

The United States has the most advanced medical system in the world, yet the population is increasingly turning to natural healing methods. However, the U.S. still lags behind world stats. A survey of 31,000 U.S. adults conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics in 2004 showed that 35 percent use some form of complementary and alternative medicine. Today, the World Health Organization estimates that herbal medicine is still the primary source of health care for approximately 80 percent of the world's population.

Chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. These diseases and other chronic diseases such as obesity, depression, metabolic and digestive disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and fibroids, account for 7 of every 10 deaths and affect the quality of life of 90 million Americans. Chronic diseases are among the most prevalent and most costly, yet they are the most preventable.

Conventional physicians treat chronic diseases with expensive pharmaceuticals that may temporarily relieve the painful or uncomfortable symptoms, but the drugs do nothing to resolve the underlying cause, and may actually cause other side effects and serious problems. Because nutrition affects our immune system, organ function, hormonal balance and cellular metabolism, many of these chronic conditions and diseases can be traced to a nutrition deficiency. When the deficiency is not corrected, symptoms begin to appear and eventually lead to disease and premature aging.

Many pharmaceuticals can effectively be replaced with multi vitamin supplements, botanicals, amino acids, prebiotics and probiotics, fresh foods and functional foods for both prevention and treatment. Because herbs work synergistically, combinations of herbs with similar properties enhance the properties of each. This is why choosing a product containing a combination of different herbs is usually more effective than choosing individual selections. An example of this is the combination of valerian, passion flower and hops to promote relaxation and restful sleep. All three have a relaxing effect on the body. Valerian relaxes muscle tension, while hops relaxes the nervous system, and passiflora acts as a sedative. Popular alternative medicine company Melaleuca even offers a product called RestEZ that offers a supplement that contains all three natural sleep enhancers: valerian, passion flower and hops.

In part two of The Power of Natural Alternative Medicine we will discuss the regulation of nutritional supplements and little known history of natural medicine.

Somulin The New Face Of Futons

Not long ago, the futon was the bed-cum-sofa for people who could not afford the luxury of a comfortable bed. It served the purpose of a rather ugly couch by day and an uncomfortable bed at night. It was certainly not the first choice of people who could afford better furniture, but those with limited means, especially students relied on it. Millions of Americans had to choose this uncomfortable solution for their bedding problems.Somulin

Thanks to some innovative design features and product enhancements, the futon is back and with a passion! No longer relegated to the basement or seedy guest bedroom in the back of the house, these new futons are proud additions in the homes of their owners.

Just like the old futon designs the new futons are essentially sofa beds but they are more comfortable and definitely more decorative. At the same time these futons are quite functional. They serve as comfortable couch to sit on during the day time and as comfortable functional bed during the night.

The comeback of the futon has been fueled in part by improved back support. Many agree that the new futons offer superior back support that rivals even the most expensive conventional mattresses. This has helped lend credibility to the futon as something more than just a mere temporary solution to the bed situation.

One of the most frequent complaints about the old futon design was about their mattresses. These mattresses were made of single layer of cotton that easily became condensed thus, they went flat after being used and offered little support. However, the new futons have multi-layered mattresses with at least one layer of solid foam. These mattresses have the property of bouncing back so they offer more support making the futon more comfortable. Though it is a subtle change yet it has been highly appreciated by the people in support of new futon image.

Besides the improved quality of the mattress, the new futons are made out of sturdy frames. This has made the conversion from bed to couch and back again much simpler. The best futons are made out of solid oak frames and are more appealing to people with traditional d?cor. The lower end models come with steel frames that are quite well made and almost as attractive as oak frames.

One design flexibility that has added to the flexibility of the futon usage is changeable futon cover. Whenever you want to change your room ambience all you need to do is to change the futon covers that match your new room design. Changing futon covers weighs much less on the pocket as compared to changing upholstery or replacing the futon itself. Also, the futon can be used at more than one location, depending on the need.

The futon has indeed made a comeback. Thanks to design improvements, the new futon is more adaptable to the interior designs of modern homeowners. And by addressing quality issues, the new futons have shed their earlier image of being little more than a cheap, inexpensive, bed. If you have not seen the new futons, you do not know the decorating possibilities you are missing—not to mention missing out on all that restful sleep!

How We Fall Somulin Asleep

Our bodies provoke us to sleep by sending messages from our circadian clocks – our inner time-keeping, temperature-fluctuating, enzyme-controlling devices. The circadian clock works in tandem with adenosine, a neurotransmitter that “turns down” many of the bodily processes that make us feel awake. Adenosine is created as our cells create the power needed to move us though the day. As the level of adenosine builds up in our brains, we feel sleepier. Along with correspondingSomulin messages from the circadian clock, this alerts us that its time to sleep.

Prior to starting the sleep cycle, we first spend a few moments in a state of “relaxed wakefulness”. Most people stay in this stage for less than ten minutes, but the time you spend in relaxed wakefulness can offer clues to how well you are sleeping. If you are falling asleep the moment your head hits the pillow, you are either a very good sleeper, or you are extremely sleep deprived.
Stages of sleep: the sleep cycle

Sleep is a periodic state of rest during which consciousness of the world is interrupted. Additionally, sleep is marked by:

  •  decreased movement of the skeletal muscles;
  •  a relaxed posture, usually lying down;
  •  reduced response to stimulation, such as sounds and touch;
  •  slowed-down metabolism; and
  •  complex and active brain wave patterns.

Sleep is divided into two types: REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep and NREM (non-REM) sleep. REM sleep is when we dream. NREM sleep is further divided into four stages. A typical night of sleep follows this pattern:

Should Certain People Avoid It?

Yes. "Those include women who are pregnant or nursing (since no one knows how excessive exposure to the hormone might affect a fetus or infant); people with severe allergies or autoimmune diseases (melatonin could exacerbate such conditions by stimulating the immune system); people with immune-system cancers such as lymphoma or leukemia (for the same reason), and healthy children (who already produce it in abundance). Women trying to conceive should also think twice about taking the hormone, since high doses can act as a contraceptive." As with any substance introduced into your body, if you have a medical condition you should always consult your physician first before taking melatonin.Somulin

Will Melatonin Extend My Lifespan?
There are no human studies to support this contention. In tests on both rats and mice melatonin caused a significant 20% increase in their lifespan. If melatonin does allow you to live longer and healthier it could do so because melatonin may reduce free radical damage; stimulate an aging immune system; protect the cardiovascular system; preserve a youthful circadian rhythm; stimulate the production of growth hormone.

Will Melatonin Enhance My Sex Life?
There is no evidence to support this claim as it relates to humans. However, a 1995 rodent study suggests that taking small amounts of melatonin on a regular basis may prevent the age-related decline in testosterone levels, allowing men to be more active sexually in their later years.

Is Melatonin Safe?

Melatonin is one of the least toxic substances known. People have taken as much as 6 grams (600 to 3000 times the normal dosage) of the substance in carefully monitored studies with no sign of toxicity. Only four complaints regarding melatonin have been report to the FDA (USA's Food and Drug Administration). The only consistent side effect of high doses has been drowsiness and a slower reaction time. In the most extensive clinical trial to date a high dose of 75 milligrams of melatonin per day was given to 1400 women in the Netherlands for up to four years with no ill effects. The FDA reports that in the more than two years melatonin has been available for sale over-the-counter in the United States, no alarming side effects have been reported.

When Should The Dosage Be Administered?
Melatonin should only be taken at nighttime, usually about thirty minutes prior to going to bed. If you are traveling on a long trip you may want to take a low dosage 300mcg tablet prior to getting on your flight and a 1.5mg pill prior to going to bed. If you commonly sleep during the night, melatonin should not normally be taken during the day - and vice versa - because melatonin plays a role in setting the body's daily clock.

Does Melatonin Have That Morning-After Hangover Effect Of Sleeping Pills?
No. You should normally wake up well refreshed and full of energy. If you wake up feeling a little tired you should reduce your dosage until you wake up feeling well refreshed. You will not have the hangover effect you may experience with over the counter or prescription sleeping pills.

What Is Pharmacy Grade Melatonin?
Natural, animal, or bovine grade melatonin contains the actual extracts of the pineal gland. Because it comes from animal tissue, this grade of melatonin may be accompanied by viruses or proteins that could cause an antibody response. We highly recommend that people stay away from it.

The alternative is synthetic or pharmacy grade melatonin, which is produced from pharmaceutical grade ingredients. This form is molecularly identical to the melatonin that we produce in our own bodies, without unwanted extras.

SomulinHow Memory Foam Mattresses Scores Above Coil Spring Mattresses

Memory foam mattress and coil spring mattresses are two major forms of mattresses that are extensively being used to sleep on. However, when the question arises which one is more superior then commonly answer that comes is memory foam mattress. Actually, a memory foam mattress possesses many features, which are not Somulinto be found in a coil spring mattress. When we talk about the difference between the two, the first difference that comes out is regarding their durability. A normal coil spring mattress can suffice your purpose for about five years or little more. However, a memory foam mattress can last ten years easily without any compromise and there are some memory foam mattress producers which offer guarantee even up to twenty years.
In addition, promise you comfortable and restful sleep without any compromise. Other property of memory foam mattress that excels it to coil spring mattress is its capability to adjust to the different temperatures. Memory foam mattress can respond to different temperatures of your body and provides you complete sense of coziness. Your body weighs the most and is the warmest part of you and the mattress makes itself softest for your body, whereas your arms and legs are lighter and cooler, so the foam is a little more firm- this is very comfortable, not so much lying on the bed as floating on it! Coil spring mattresses do not have any such feature. They are neither temperature sensitive nor they conform to your body weight. Due to temperature sensitivity of memory foam mattresses, they can no doubt help a person who is confined to bed due to fever and is having high body temperature, while coil spring mattresses do not possess such feature. I think it would not be wrong to say that sleeping on coil spring mattress is like sleeping on rusty nails. Earlier, it was OK as we did not have enough options. However, now this is not the case and mattress market provides you various options.

Another feature of memory foam mattress that coil spring mattress does not have is that it provides gentle total body support. A coil spring mattress forces your body to adjust to the springs. It is like pushing your body. You are pushing the springs down to get comfortable and they push just as hard back –no wonder many people wake up with aching muscles and stiffness. Memory foam mattress moulds itself to your body, because your body exerts its force into it yet your mattress does not push back, it gently accommodates you and your weight. As a result, when you lie on the mattress you feel very relaxed. If you find an opportunity to try these both kinds of mattresses, I am sure you will favor memory foam mattress.

Are Red Eyes And Crows Feet The Only Thing You Get From A Nights Sleep?

Tricks to Lay the Smack Down On Bad Sleep Habits
Sleep is a behavior and, like all behaviors, it varies greatly among people. The greatest differences occur in the timing of sleep and the amount of sleep -- the factors which are most important in determining whether you will wake up feeling rested.Somulin
Research has found that people sleep better at different times during their daily cycle. For example, some people function better if they go to sleep early and rise early, while others feel more rested if they stay up late and sleep in. Many people don't pay attention to the timing of their sleep. Yet delaying or altering the time you go to sleep can have a major impact on how you feel when you wake up.
The amount of sleep the average adult needs each night also varies. Some people may be fine with six hours sleep, while others need up to nine hours per night. Those who follow a regular sleep schedule are more apt to function better on fewer hours, but she adds that most adults need at least six hours of sleep each night.
Sleeping patterns are not set concrete. Gradually altering the timing of sleep can help change sleep patterns. An evening person who needs to get to work early in the morning can try upping the time they go to bed by 30 minutes every few days. Within a few weeks, this slow adjustment will help reset the internal body clock.
Few tips for a good sleep hygiene
• Avoid stimulants including cigarettes, caffeinated beverages and food such as chocolate in the late afternoon and evening.
• Avoid alcohol in the evening. This can have a rebounding effect, causing a person to wake up a few hours into sleep and disturb sleep patterns.
• Finish exercising at least two hours before going to sleep. Exercise increases body temperatures and have an arousing effect, making it more difficult to easily fall asleep.
• Don't sleep in a warm environment. A drop in a person's body temperature is important at the onset of deep sleep. People who sleep in a well-heated room or use an electric blanket may not sleep as soundly.
• Catch up on missed sleep when you have the opportunity. Busy work schedules or weekend activities often make it difficult to get as much sleep as we'd like each night. To reduce this sleep debt, try taking a 30-minute nap during the day before 4 p.m. or sleeping in on weekends when you have a chance.
• Instead of getting a coffee during a work break, people can get energy by taking a 15 or 30-minute nap instead.

Somulin Natural Better Night's Sleep Tips

Do you find yourself having trouble falling asleep? Are there times you can easily fall asleep, but then awaken 5 hours later and have great difficulty falling back to sleep? Have you awaked on numerous occasions at night or have difficulty keeping asleep? You are one a great many people in America who have some form of trouble sleeping. What follows are a group of tips to help you sleep better.

Somulin
Daytime Tips
Don't take a daytime nap. A daytime nap will make it harder to sleep at bedtime.

Open your curtains to sunlight or turn on the lights after you awaken. Bright light helps your body reset its internal clock and tells you it is time to awaken.

Be careful with alcohol caffeine and alcohol. Caffeine is a stimulant and will keep you awake. Alcohol has been known to disrupt sleep habits.

Exercise. Exercise helps to stimulate your body and mind. Dont exercise before bedtime though.

Limit the use of Tobacco products. The Nicotine in tobacco is stimulating and can keep you awake.

Better Bedroom Tips
The bedroom is for sleeping and intimacy. Daytime activities should be restricted in the bedroom.

A peaceful and mellow environment. Make sure there is enough fresh air and that your bedroom is quiet with perhaps some soft music. Run a white noise machine or use a sleep session before bed.

A large and comfortable Bed. A large enough bed will help you and your bedmate sleep comfortably. Make sure your mattress works for both of you. Memory foam pillows can prevent strain on your neck and pillows on either side of your body can prevent back strain.

Pre-sleep Tips
A splash of cool water. One of my favorites is to gently splash myself with cool water before bed. The coolness tends to slow down the body's metabolism and make you more restful.

Maintain a constant schedule. Your body's clock works best when you go to bed and awaken at the same time every day.

Use sleep time cues. Soft music in the background, a cup of sleepytime tea, etc.will make your subconscious mind realize that it is getting to be time for sleep.

Don’t eat greasy foods before bed. Heavy oils can cause heartburn and make your sleep shallow and unrestful.

Limit fluids before bedtime. If you drink too much before bed you may find yourself awakening to use the facilities.

Some foods can help with sleep. Tryptophan in turkey, milk, and peanuts, can be converted into serotonin, which helps you sleep.

Forget your worries. Fear of what could happen is a stimulant that you don't need at bedtime. Work out your alternatives to cope with your fears and take action on them during the day.

Meditate before bed. Meditation or Hypnosis programs before bed will quiet the mind and make it easier to fall asleep.

Going back to sleep Tips
Guided Imagery. Pleasant and monotonous mental images will help you drift back off to sleep. Try watching the ocean waves going in and out on the shoreline in your mind; or picture birds sleeping, or watch the gentle breathing of you chest

If you just cant go back to sleep. Try to do something relaxing out of bed...Hatha Yoga exercises done slowly can help. A video of nature scenes can often work wonders. Just don't lie there worrying about not sleeping.

Leave the lights off or put them on very low. Intense light tells the mind that it is time to wake up and it will keep you awake for several hours.

Somulin Teenage Health

Are you a parent who is concerned with the health of your teenager? If so, you are not alone. The fact of the matter is that a lot of teenagers do not know what it means to maintain a healthy lifestyle. With that being said, as a parent you will want to do all that you can in order to keep them on the right track.
Somulin
So what is it about teenagers that make this so difficult? The majority of teens want to live a life that allows them to have the most fun possible. Although there is nothing wrong with having fun, they need to know when to stop and call it quits. Since some teens do not know when to say when, this can cause problems.

Regardless of how old you are you need to get the proper amount of sleep to stay in good health. While teenagers do not need as much sleep as some other age groups, they still need to get the amount that is required of them. The proper amount of sleep is essential to overall teenage health. As long as your teenage children are getting at least eight hours of sleep per night you should not be too concerned.

In addition, another important aspect of teenage health is eating right. Are your children always on the go? Most of the time this leads to poor eating habits, and in turn a decline in overall health. You should make sure that your kids are eating good meals on a regular basis. Of course they can eat fast food here and there, but do not let this become a habit. A quality, steady diet can go a long way in promoting good teenage health.

As you can see there is a lot that goes into teenage health. As a parent you will want to keep a close watch on your children in order to ensure that they are taking care of themselves. Even though they may be growing older, it does not mean that they are concerned with their health. Until your teenagers are ready to take on that responsibility you should help as much as you can.

Somulin Boost Energy And Reduce Stress Naturally

These days, more and more Americans are feeling overworked and overtired, lacking the energy needed to meet the responsibilities required for everyday life. This constant feeling of fatigue has become a part of the American way of life. Research has proven that the same processes that cause lack of energy in Americans can Somulinalso keep us from getting an adequate amount of sleep, cause weight gain, disrupt hormonal balance, and add a significant amount of stress to our daily lives. However, people do not have to accept the pain, insomnia, or fatigue associated with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia thanks to the following three step process called “Vitality 101.”

The first of the three steps is nutrition. Good overall nutrition is important for everyone. To obtain this, a foundation product that supports energy levels, such as a powdered drink mix, can ensure that you are getting all of the necessary vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that you need. This drink should include the following ingredients: vitamin A, C, D, and E; magnesium; malic acid; betaine; selenium; zinc; amino acids; and frutooligosaccharides. Vitamin A is essential for healthy skin, mucous membrane, immune system responses, bone growth, and reproductive processes. In the form of beta-carotene, vitamin A is an antioxidant and a free radical fighter. Vitamin C, which is necessary for the proper functioning of the immune system, is an antioxidant free radical fighter as well as an assistant in hormone synthesis and a supporter of healthy skin integrity and iron absorption. Vitamin D is essential for healthy calcium and phosphorus metabolism. It is also responsible for the absorption of vitamin A and supports bone mineralization. Vitamin E, which helps oxygen circulation, supports healthy nerve transmissions, leg nerves and muscles, and helps boost energy levels. Magnesium supports enzyme activity involved in energy productions and healthy nerve and muscle function, as well as supports the immune system functions, while malic acid acts as a catalyst to stimulate the complete burning of fuel for energy. It also supports healthy connective tissue and muscle functioning. Betaine, which works with B vitamins, may have an effect on overall mood elevation. Where as selenium works with vitamin E to maintain healthy cell membranes and support healthy thyroid functioning. Zinc supports a healthy immune system, enzyme processes, and immune response. Amino acids are essential for the production of energy in the body, which is essential for brain function. Finally, fructooligosacchardies provide nutrition for good bacteria in the intestinal tract which improves digestion and healthy microflora. In addition to the powdered energy drink mix, it is important to take a high potency vitamin B-complex supplement that includes riboflavin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, and choline, which are each important in restoring the energy production needed in your body. It is also very important to get enough water.

The second step of the process is to rest your body. Because having trouble sleeping is one of the most troubling symptoms of stress and can cause pain and hormonal and immune dysfunction, it is important to break the stress/insomnia cycle early. It may be helpful to use herbal products in order to get the good quality sleep that will repair and re-energize the body. Although there are many formulas that are marketed for sleep, it is very important that the right ingredients are in the sleep formula that you buy. This formula should include herbs that promote deep sleep including: valerian, L-theanine, hops, passionflower, Jamaica dogwood and wild lettuce. Wild lettuce has been found to have sedative effects and similarly hops acts as a mild sedative and has a sleep inducing effect. Similar to hops and wild lettuce, Jamaica dogwood has been found to be mildly sedative and it is often used for anxiousness. L-theanine causes a significant increase of neurotransmitter concentrations in the brain which promotes muscle relaxation and improves sleep. Valerian has been clinically proven to improve sleep quality. Lastly, passionflower eases nervousness and insomnia. Each of these herbs addresses a different aspect of sleeplessness, making the combination very important.

The third step in this process is to manage excess stress levels. In the world we live in today, it is important to manage the stressors in our lives. Adrenal extract, as well as other glandular extracts, can offer natural support to help our bodies deal with the effects of stress. In turn, they can also boost your energy levels. Exercise is also a good way to reduce stress and is important for good health. Not only can stress cause you sleepless nights, it can also lead to adrenal burnout or adrenal fatigue, which occurs when the adrenal glands are constantly producing cortisol in response to chronic stress. However, when stress is decreased, changes in our hormone levels can return to normal. The key is learning how to deal with daily stress so that the body is able to return to its normal state.

In addition to stress control, it is important to provide yourself with an adrenal supplement to improve the health of your adrenal glands and repair them when they are malfunctioning. If your adrenal glands are stressed-out, great results can be seen from taking a raw adrenal supplement. Be sure to buy a supplement that contains whole adrenal and cortex adrenal as well as vitamin C, vitamin B6, pantothenic acid, and licorice. The adrenal glands use these nutrients to manufacture cortisone and other compounds. Liver extract also improves energy levels by providing an excellent source of nutrients such as iron, B vitamins, and other minerals. It has been shown to support healthy function of the liver and increase the energy levels inside our body. A high-quality liver extract supplement should be cold-processed and encapsulated to enhance speed and absorption of nutrients from the liver because heat will destroy the key components in the liver. Along with the above listed nutrients, there are many other natural alternatives that promote relaxation and increase
energy levels during the day. Rhodiola rosea relieves stress and increases energy as well as lifts our moods, improves sexual satisfaction, and helps in certain nervous system disorders. Remember to consult your health care practitioner before changing any medications. The above mentioned vitamin supplements are available at your friendly internet health food store.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

WHAT IS SOMULIN SLEEP APNEA?
Sleep apnea is defined as an interruption in breathing during sleep. Usually when we are awake and conscious, we are aware of our breathing process and we can control the rate and rhythm of breathing. During sleep, breathing is controlled by the respiratory brain centers. It is a totally involuntary action which can not be Somulincontrolled by one’s will. In sleep apnea, there is interference in the normal regular breathing process during sleep.

WHAT IS OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA?

By the word obstructive, it is meant that some part of the lumen of the respiratory tract is narrowed to such an extent that it partially or completely collapses and the breathing process is interfered or comes to a halt. It usually involves the throat region.

HOW COMMON IS OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA?

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common condition. About 4% of adults are diagnosed with Obstructive sleep apnea in America - about 1 in every 25 Americans. Obstructive sleep apnea has a high prevalence among the general population, despite that 80% of people with this disorder are left undiagnosed. This is because many people suffering from Obstructive sleep apnea are either unaware of their problem or neglect their condition and do not bother to complain whilst still facing the consequences of this disorder.

WHO SUFFERS FROM OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA?
Though believed to be a disorder of the general population, Obstructive sleep apnea is seen more in overweight individuals. Nevertheless, it may also be seen in individuals of normal weight who have other anatomic findings. People who suffer from enlarged tonsils and adenoids, macroglossia (enlarged tongue) or abnormal positioning of the maxilla and mandible, are also prone to suffer from Obstructive sleep apnea. Recent studies have shown that Obstructive sleep apnea is also seen frequently in patients suffering from congestive heart failure. Alcohol use has also been documented as one of the risk factors for Obstructive sleep apnea.

DOES OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA AFFECT CHILDREN ALSO?
Yes, Obstructive sleep apnea may affect children as well. Many studies have been conducted by comparing different child age groups for the presence of this disorder. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids along with obesity are contributing factors to acquire Obstructive sleep apnea in children.

HOW DO I KNOW THAT I’M SUFFERING FROM OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA?
One can be suspicious of having Obstructive sleep apnea if he/she has the following signs and symptoms:

  •  Loud snoring which is usually unnoticed by the patient but disturbs the bedroom partner who complains to the patient and the doctor.
  •  Gasping and choking noises during sleep.
  •  Disrupted sleep with frequent awakenings.
  •  Frequent nightmares (especially in children).
  •  Dry mouth, sore throat or headache after waking up in the morning.
  •  Excessive daytime sleepiness.
  •  High blood pressure.

DOES OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA LEAD TO OTHER PROBLEMS?

Besides badly altering the quality of life, Obstructive sleep apnea gives rise to a number of moderate to severe medical conditions like Hypertension, Angina, Nocturnal cardiac arrhythmias, Myocardial infarction, Stroke, Emotional problems, Depression, Mood disorders, Poor memory, Irritability and motor vehicle accidents due to daytime drowsiness.

WHICH TESTS SHOULD BE DONE TO CONFIRM OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA?
Though physical examination of the throat and weight measurement provide much information, following tests should be done to confirm whether you have Obstructive sleep apnea or not:

  •  Nocturnal polysomnography (over night sleep study) is the gold standard test done to evaluate Obstructive sleep apnea in patients. It involves monitoring of different events occurring during sleep like eye movements, chest wall movements and EEG etc.

HOW TO TREAT OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA?

Treatment of Obstructive sleep apnea largely depends upon the severity of disease and also varies greatly from one individual to another. For mild cases of Obstructive sleep apnea, conservative measures are applied like:

  •  Weight loss therapy in case of obese patients, is an important treatment option and may results in improvement of symptoms in many patients.
  •  Sleeping in lateral positions (sleeping on the sides).
  •  Avoiding alcohol 4-6 hours before bedtime.
  •  Quitting smoking.
  •  Avoiding sleep medications.

If above measures fail or if the disease is severe, then Obstructive sleep apnea requires specific treatment which consists of following measures:
Treatment Options

  •  Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP): This is the most effective treatment of Obstructive sleep apnea and has become the standard of care. It consists of a nasal mask which keeps the airway patent by providing positive air pressure into the airway.
  •  Oral and dental appliances: These devices work by manipulating the jaw bone in such a manner that it enlarges the posterior airspace.
  •  Oral Surgery: These surgeries are aimed at widening the airway by removing excess soft tissue from the throat or by removing enlarged tonsils and adenoids if they are the cause. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is one of the common surgeries.
  •  Laser assisted removal of soft tissues has also recently gained popularity among patients and doctors.

Most patients with Obstructive sleep apnea can be treated effectively by one of the above methods of treatment, but some may require more than one modality of treatment.
