Gas means different things to different people. When people complain of gas, they usually mean - frequent belching of air from the stomach, bloating of the abdomen after eating and / or frequent passing of gas from the rectum. Gas is usually the result of certain habits or diet choices. It occurs in one of two ways: as a result of swallowed air, or it is produced in the intestinal tract. Reclining after eating, inactivity, and stress may contribute to the problem. Most people think they have too much of it. And passing gas in the wrong place at the wrong time can cause great embarrassment. Symptoms of gas are increased passage of gas, abdominal bloating or pain, and belching. The most common ways to reduce the discomfort of gas are changing diet, taking medicines and reducing the amount of air swallowed. One should careful note down what foods cause gas by keeping a food diary. If your intake of gas producing food is high, you remove them from your diet till you see relief. If you're lactose intolerant, remove all the diary foods from your diet group at least for a fortnight. If you belch, avoid swallowing too much air, eating chewing gum or hard candy. And eat slowly. Avoid overeating and limit high fat content foods to reduce any symptoms of gas. Regulation of bowel function is essential. Constipation should be treated with increased dietary fiber or certain laxatives. Avoid gas-promoting foods such as beans, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, onions, cauliflower, whole wheat flour, radishes, bananas, apricots, pretzels, etc. Chew 1 tbsp Fennel seeds after meals to avoid gas and bloating If your infant has a tough time passing gas, simply lift the baby and move around in an upright position, patting him bit. This will help the release of gas. Take a pinch of Asafoetida, add little coconut oil and apply it on the child's stomach.A pinch of Asafoetida mixed in drinkable warm water will provide relief from gas.Drink a mixture made from ½ tsp dry ginger powder, pinch of asafoetida and rock salt mixed with a cupful of warm water.Drinking 2 tsp of brandy mixed with warm water before going to bed provides relief.Chew on some fresh ginger slices soaked in lime juice after meals.A drop of dill oil in a tsp of honey taken immediately after a meal will help.Powder 1 tsp of pepper, 1 tsp of dry ginger and 1 tsp of green cardamom seeds. Mix ½ tsp of this mixture with water and drink an hour after a meal.Consume a cup of water with a pinch of baking soda & lemon juice.Chew a spoonful of celery seeds to get quick relief.Drinking Chamomile tea helps to improve digestion and aids in expelling trapped gas in the digestive tract. I am a 34 year old male in good health. In general, I eat pretty healthy and I go to the gym 4-5 times a week. However, I have been trying to figure out a stomach/GI issue that I have been dealing with for the past couple of years. When it started a couple of years ago, it only occurred every once in a while. Then it started happening a couple times a week. Well, in the past 4 or so months, it has been occurring every day and has become progressively worse. Basically, I am dealing with abdominal bloating/distention and intestinal gas. When this issue started a few years ago, it seemed like the intestinal gas was the more prominent issue. However, it is the daily distention that is affecting my quality of life. It is extremely uncomfortable and sometimes downright painful (the pressure); not to mention it can potentially be embarrassing. When it is bad, I don’t feel like doing much and the pressure buildup also leads to more frequent urination. I have tried many things that don’t seem to help. Basically, it starts off in the morning where I feel slightly bloated, but it isn’t that bad. I would say on a scale of 1-10, it starts off at about “2” on a daily basis. Then throughout the day, the gas pressure/bloating builds and peaks (anywhere from 7-10 on the scale). It seems like it peaks in the early afternoon during the week because I start my days early. On the weekends, it seems to peak in the late afternoon because I usually eat breakfast later than during the week. My doctor is perplexed because these are the only symptoms. Because my symptoms don’t include any elimination issues (i.e. diarrhea, constipation, etc.), he says that IBS and other similar diseases/issues are unlikely; I don’t fit the profile. I have tried the following supplements, but none have worked: Gas X Charco-Caps Lactaid (for dairy) Beeno (digestive enzyme) Peppermint oil capsules (to help alleviate intestinal gas/bloating) Papaya enzymes (to help alleviate intestinal gas/bloating) Fennel seeds (chewing them is supposed to help intestinal gas/bloating) Prilosec OTC (tried this for 2 weeks even though I don’t have heartburn) Digestive Advantage – IBS (even though I don’t have IBS, this is supposed to help bloating by restoring the balance of good bacteria in my GI Tract. This will only work if the bacteria count is skewed) My doctor tested me for Celiac disease and for the H. Pylori bacteria. Both of these blood tests were negative. Recently, I took the lactose intolerance hydrogen breath test and found out that I am not lactose intolerant. This explains why the Lactaid didn’t help me, but unfortunately, none of the other things mentioned above helped me either. Not even when taken in combination. Although I am not lactose intolerant, I just found information related to a milk ingredient called Casein. I have heard that this could cause GI issues, but from what I understand, is a lot less common. I also had an abdominal ultrasound. The results were normal. The only thing noted was that there was a small mass on my gall bladder which the doctor wasn’t at all concerned with. He said that it is most likely a cholesterol polyp which is nothing to worry about and would not cause the symptoms that I am experiencing. I also sent in my hem-occult slides to my doctor’s office. I have been keeping a daily food journal to see if there are any specific food items that seem to cause these symptoms. However, I have been unable to find ANY correlation between items. At this point, my doctor seems to think that I have some type of food intolerance (not allergy). However, I am a bit skeptical because I am waking up bloated. I thought that symptoms from an intolerance would disappear overnight. Before, I thought that I was starting at “0” in the mornings, but I just don’t think I realized that I was actually waking up slightly bloated. I tend to hold my stomach in because it helps with my lower back pain. The only other suggestions that my doctor has at this point is to try two different dietary changes. The first one would be to try a modified Atkins diet/reduced carb diet. If this doesn’t make a difference during the two-week trial, he recommends that I try a two-week gluten-free diet. I am willing to try anything to find a resolution to this issue, but a gluten-free diet would be extremely difficult for me to follow based on my normal daily diet. I was going to start the first dietary change in a couple of days, but I have decided to try this Digestive Advantage product first. I don’t want to change my diet yet because then I won’t know if this product is working.

The treatment of excessive intestinal gas depends on the cause. If there is maldigestion of specific sugars-lactose, sorbitol, or fructose--the offending sugars can be eliminated from the diet. In the case of lactose in milk, an alternative treatment is available. Enzymes that are similar to intestinal lactase can be added to the milk in order to break down the lactose prior to its ingestion so that it can be absorbed normally. Some people find that yogurt, in which the lactose has been broken down partially by bacteria, produces less gas than milk. There also are certain types of vegetables and fruits that contain types of starches that are poorly digested by people but well digested by bacteria. These include beans, lentils, cabbage, brussel sprouts, onions, carrots, bananas, apricots, and prunes. Reducing the intake of these vegetables and fruits, as well as foods made from whole grains, should reduce gas and flatulence. However, the list of gas-producing foods is rather long, and it may be difficult to eliminate them all without severely restricting the diet. When maldigestion is due to pancreatic insufficiency, then supplemental pancreatic enzymes can be ingested with meals to replace the missing enzymes. If maldigestion and/or malabsorption is caused by disease of the intestinal lining, the specific disease must be identified, most commonly through a small bowel biopsy. Then, treatment can be targeted for that condition. For example, if celiac disease is found on the biopsy, a gluten-free diet can be started. An interesting form of treatment for excessive gas is alpha-D-galactosidase, an enzyme that is produced by a mold. This enzyme, commercially available as Beano, is consumed as either a liquid or tablet with meals. This enzyme is able to break down some of the difficult-to-digest polysaccharides in vegetables so that they may be absorbed. This prevents them from reaching the colonic bacteria and causing unnecessary production of gas . Beano has been shown to be effective in decreasing the incidence of intestinal gas. Two other types of treatment have been promoted for the treatment of gas; simethicone and activated charcoal. It is unclear if simethicone has an effect on gas in the stomach. However, it has no effect on the formation of gas in the colon. Moreover, in the stomach, simethicone would be expected only to affect swallowed air, which, as previously mentioned, is an uncommon cause of excessive intestinal gas. Nevertheless, some individuals are convinced that simethicone helps them. Activated charcoal has been shown to reduce the formation of gas in the colon, though the way in which it does so is unknown. If there is a physical obstruction to the emptying of the stomach or passage of food, liquid, and gas through the small intestine, then surgical correction of the obstruction is required. If the obstruction is functional, medications that promote activity of the muscles of the stomach and small intestine are given. Examples of these medicines are erythromycin or metoclopramide (Reglan).Bacterial overgrowth of the small bowel is usually treated with antibiotics. However, this treatment is frequently only temporarily effective or not effective at all. When antibiotics provide only a temporary benefit, it may be necessary to treat patients intermittently or even continuously with antibiotics. If antibiotics are not effective, probiotics (e.g., lactobacillus) can be tried although their use in bacterial overgrowth has not been studied. This condition may be difficult to treat.

The usual cause of belching is excessive gas in the stomach that comes from swallowed air. However, discomfort in the abdomen for any reason may also cause belching. Therefore, belching does not always indicate the presence of excessive gas in the stomach. Bloating is the subjective feeling that the abdomen is enlarged but does not necessarily mean that the abdomen is, in fact, enlarged. Distention is the objective enlargement of the abdomen..Continuous distention of the abdomen is usually caused by fluid, tumors, enlarged organs, or fat within the abdomen..Intermittent distention of the abdomen may be caused by excessive formation of intestinal gas, as well as physical or functional obstruction of the intestines.Flatulence results from the production of gas by bacteria within the intestines when they digest sugars and polysaccharides.Excessive production of gas and increased flatulence may occur because of: the greater ability of some bacteria to produce gas; maldigestion or malabsorption of sugars and polysaccharides; and bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine. Belching, bloating/distention, and flatulence are evaluated with a medical history, simple abdominal x-rays, small intestinal x-rays, gastric emptying studies, ultrasound examination, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), tests for maldigestion and malabsorption, and hydrogen breath testing. The treatment of excessive intestinal gas depends on the underlying cause and may include dietary changes, medications that reduce the amount of gas, medications that stimulate the muscles of the intestine, or antibiotics.

Causes Of Intestinal Gas And Flatulence Eighty to ninety percent of flatulence results from bacterial metabolism. The intestines are crowded with helpful bacteria that aid in digestion. Bacterial metabolism produces the basic ingredients of intestinal gas: hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide. Some of this intestinal gas is diffused into the blood and exits quietly through the lungs. Intestinal gas in the stomach often escapes as belching, an embarrassing, but somewhat more socially respectable alterative to flatus. But a hefty chunk of bacteria-generated intestinal gas exits as flatulence. Eating certain fruits and vegetables increases the chances of flatulence. The list of flatus producing foods includes: * Beans * Broccoli * Brussel sprouts * Cabbage * Cauliflower * Cucumbers * Melons * Onions * Radishes * Turnips. Carbohydrates are the most effective (or notorious) wind generators. Some people are simply better able to digest carbohydrates than others, explaining how a bowl of chili can cause abdominal bloating in one person, and no symptoms of intestinal gas at all in another. Heredity And Flatus Heredity plays a large role in flatulence. Intestinal bacteria levels seem to be higher in some families than others. When excessive flatulence has a hereditary cause, wind makes itself known early in infancy and continues throughout life. Medical Causes Of Abdominal Bloating And Flatus A number of intestinal health problems cause excessive flatulence and abdominal bloating. Malabsorption syndromes such as gluten intolerance or lactose intolerance can cause painful abdominal bloating and gas if the wrong foods are ingested. People with irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatic insufficiency and tropical sprue can also experience general abdominal bloating and flatulence.

Bloating is a very common symptom that people often experience after eating a meal. The bloating is usually felt in the lower part of the abdomen and sometimes in the upper section. Bloating usually feels as if there is pressure being applied from the inside and people often report that they can look up to six months pregnant. Bloating after eating is often different to the bloating experienced with menopause, pregnancy and PMS. Bloating after eating feels gassy and is usually relieved after passing wind or burping. This kind of bloating can be caused by certain foods. However, if it happens frequently, it can also indicate a digestive problem such as leaky gut syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, candida overgrowth, intestinal parasites, celiac disease, Crohn?s disease, ulcerative colitis and general food allergies and intolerances. Apart from bloating after eating, a common symptom of all of these conditions is chronic tiredness. This is because your digestive system is responsible for the breakdown and absorption of nutrients from the food you eat. If there is a digestive problem, its easy to become nutrient deficient and this commonly causes chronic tiredness. So, how do you know if you are bloating because of foods that you are eating, or because you have a digestive problem? A person with a healthy digestive system will experience far less bloating, even with foods that commonly cause bloating. However, the list of foods below commonly causes bloating in many people. 1. Raffinose - a sugar found in beans, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, other vegetables and whole grains. Eaten raw, these foods cause more bloating than when they are cooked. 2. Lactose - a natural sugar found mainly in milk and milk products, such as cheese, cream, yoghurt and ice cream. Lactose levels are much hig her in milk and non-fat milk than in cheese and yogurt. Lactose is commonly associated with irritable bowel syndrome. 3. Fructose - a sugar found in fruits and honey. It?s also used as a sweetener in some soft drinks, fruit drinks and processed foods. Fructose is also considered to be an important contributing factor to irritable bowel syndrome for many people. 4. Sorbitol - a sugar found naturally in fruits, including apples, pears, peaches, and prunes, and is also used as an artificial sweetener in many dietetic foods and sugar-free candies and gums. 5. Starches - most starches, including potatoes, corn, rice, bread, noodles and any products made from flour produce gas as they are broken down in the large intestine. 6.Wheat ? in particular, wheat appears to be a major source of bloating and gas. Most people find that if they eliminate wheat and flour products, their bloating nearly always improves. 7.Soluble fibre ? this type of fibre dissolves easily in water and takes on a soft, gel-like texture in the intestines. It?s found in oat bran, beans, peas and most fruits. 8. Insoluble fiber ? this type of fibre doesn?t dissolve in water and passes unchanged through the intestines and therefore produces less gas than soluble fibre. It is found in wheat bran and most fruit and vegetable skins. 9.Legumes commonly cause bloating and gas due to their complex structure of starch and protein. Soaking and cooking legumes well helps to reduce bloating.

Thousands of parents are finding that following a gluten-free and casein-free diet helps ease the symptoms of childhood Autism. What constitutes a gluten-free and casein-free diet? A gluten-free and casein-free diet is the elimination of gluten and casein, common gastrointestinal allergens, from the diet. Try cutting all wheat and milk products for a month and determine whether or not your child is: A) Responding better to his or her environment; B) Healthier look in the eyes; C) Rashes decrease and D) Less painful bloating and gas. Eliminating wheat (gluten) and milk (casein) from a child’s diet need not be an unpleasant experience, although most parents feel that a total diet change would be more complex, expensive, and stressful than filling a prescription. Therefore, they might see a diet change as a last resort for their child displaying Autism symptoms. A word to the wise here, the doctor could very easily miss certain symptoms, by not looking in the right places, and the child, the parents, as well as the physician, are running a risk by not first checking for food allergies and intolerance. The doctor might administer medicine to the child that was manufactured with gluten or casein in it, thereby exacerbating the situation with another source of the allergen. Worse, the doctor could prescribe either hyperactivity or psychotropic drugs which could further disable the child. It is important to know that many studies have surveyed children with autism and found very few who showed celiac disease symptoms. On the other hand, it is also important to acknowledge that many children, with symptoms amounting to Asperger’s Syndrome, which is not quite full-blown autism, will find relief from their symptoms--and even seemingly unrelated allergies--by changing to a gluten-free and casein-free diet. It need not be a torture process, either. Here at the Gluten-Free Mall, we offer plenty of goodies and snacks to warm the heart and bolster morale. Autism, or childhood autism, cannot be cured by a change in diet. However, many children diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome or autism might find much relief to their symptoms with a diet change. Have your child’s small intestine checked for food malabsorption. Some doctors are quicker to try to cure conditions with medicine rather than food-based remedies, and some parents are too. Remember, though, dealing with Autism is not a walk in the park. It is a lifelong journey for the child and their family. Take your time and patience with diagnosis and treatment

Wheat and gluten as a cause of bloating death in cattle. Is there a parallel to wheat gluten's contribution to the obesity and gas-bloating in humans? Wheat fed to cattle can kill them. Excess wheat or barley feed can result in a bloating disorder known as wheat pasture bloat, feedlot bloat, free-gas bloat or frothy bloat. Wheat and barley are fed to cattle because they are a cheap source of high protein grains that result in rapid weight gain for finishing cattle off for slaughter. However, if too much wheat or barley is fed to cattle, especially high gluten containing wheat, the cattle die. Their stomach, called the rumen, accumulates excessive gas putting pressure on the heart and lungs leading to death. My physician wife with celiac disease grew up in rural Missouri and their family had a few head of cattle. When I asked her if she had ever heard of pasture bloat she described how she once tried to help the local vet save one of their cows that developed pasture bloat. The vet punctured the cow's "stomach" to let gas escape but the cow still died. I have patients who tell me they feel like they are dying from abdominal pain and bloating and they wish someone would puncture their stomach to let all the air out. Those who who try a gluten-free or wheat-free diet don't feel that way anymore. After only a few weeks of a gluten-free diet most say their bloating is gone. Many of the family members of my patients with celiac disease go on the diet in support of them and then note dramatic improvements in a number of symptoms associated with gluten and celiac disease though do not necessarily meet criteria for the disorder. Many of people complain of being unable to lose weight. Yet a careful review of their diet reveals that, like most Americans, they getting more than 20% of their daily calories from carbohydrates containing gluten. If the cattle industry knows that wheat and barley grains rapidly fatten up cattle we shouldn't be surprised at the obesity epidemic in our grain and carbohydrate focused diet. Overweight and obese people who go on a gluten-free diet lose weight. The low carbohydrate diet, by nature a low gluten diet, has been so successful, in my opinion, because not only do people lose weight but they feel better. They report their headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, brain fog and bloating are better. This along with their significant weight loss motivates them to stick with the diet. My specialty training in gastroenterology taught me to advise people, especially those with irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulosis, to eat lots of whole grains and to take fiber supplements. The U.S. government's official food pyramid also encourages this recommendation. I eventually stopped recommending fiber supplements and so much grain to my patients because most bitterly complained of increased bloating, gas and abdominal discomfort. Now that I have personal experience after my wife’s diagnosis of celiac and my diagnosis of gluten sensitivity and I have read hundreds of articles and counseled hundreds of patients my expert opinion is that such recommendations are not only unhelpful but harmful. So, why do they give wheat, wheat gluten, and barley grain feeds to cattle when it has long been known that those grains as a sole source of nutrition are not only inadequate but toxic? Those grains are inexpensive. They produces very fast and dramatic weight gains in cattle for a favorable feed cost per pound of weight gained. However, great care must be exercised in using wheat or barley for fattening cattle because of the nutritional inadequacies and potential side effects. Supplements are required for several reasons. Wheat alone can result in low calcium levels that can cause grass tetany, a form of muscle spasms or paralysis. An exclusive or very high wheat diet can cause a ruminant acidosis (high levels of acid in the blood) that is also fatal to cattle. Excess wheat or barley intake or as a inappropriate proportion of the protein calories can result in fatal wheat pasture bloat or feedlot bloat.

Bloating is a sensation that makes the abdomen feel larger than normal. The abdomen doesn't get physically bigger until its volume increases by one quart, so the bloated feeling may occur, but the abdomen is not distended. Intestinal gas may cause the feeling of bloating. Here are additional suggestions to decrease bloating: * Eat slowly, and consume smaller, more frequent meals * Chew your foods well * Drink beverages at room temperature * Have your dentures checked for a good fit * Increase physical activity during the day * Sit up straight after eating * Take a stroll after eating It is important not to completely omit foods from the diet that may cause gas. As we know, a high-fiber diet is important for bowel regularity and colon health, so it is well worth the patience it may take to slowly build up tolerance to these types of carbohydrates. Start by adding the offending high-fiber food in smaller quantities, such as a half cup or less. Be sure that fluid intake and activity levels are adequate, as they help to move foods through the digestive tract. Natural And Other Remedies For Gas Many advertisements tout medications or remedies that reduce gas and bloating. Some have been shown to be of value in clinical studies, others have not yet been proven scientifically but are anecdotally helpful. Before trying anything, you may want to consult with your physician. Two products on the market can help with food-related gas and bloating. Both products are packaged forms of the enzymes needed to break down the problematic carbohydrates. Lactase, found in products such as Dairy Ease and Lactaid, can be taken with dairy foods to help break down lactose and lessen gas. Beano helps digest the indigestible carbohydrate in beans and other gas-producing vegetables. Natural remedies for gas include: * Peppermint tea * Chamomile tea * Anise * Caraway * Coriander * Fennel * Tumeric Over-the-counter gas remedies include: * Pepto-Bismol * Activated charcoal * Simethicone * Lactase enzyme (Lactaid or Dairy Ease) * Beano When To Be Concerned In most situations, occasional gas and abdominal discomfort does not require medical attention. Over-the-counter products, or a self-assessment of habits and changes in eating behaviors can help remedy the situation. However, you should seek medical attention when there is an increase in frequency, location or severity of the symptoms, or if they are accompanied by weight loss, diarrhea, vomiting or heartburn.

Many women suffer from bloating and it can be quite frustrating especially if you have an occasion that requires you to dress up. Bloating isn’t caused by just eating certain foods; stress can also cause indigestion and bloating. To avoid bloating, eat slowly and chew your food well, exercise regularly and avoid the foods that cause you the most discomfort. Everyday stress for some people can result in indigestion and bloating. A common disorder, it is found more in women than men and is often caused by certain foods and stress. Gas, bloating and flatulence are side effects of our natural digestive processes. A small amount of gas production is normal throughout the day. It is a common symptom that people often experience after eating a meal. What are the common Causes of Bloating? • Overeating • Lactose intolerance and other food intolerances • Air swallowing • Constipation • Irritable bowel syndrome Foods that may cause gas and bloating Some foods are well-known to cause bloating, they are: • Vegetables such as beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, onions, artichokes, and asparagus • Whole grains such as whole wheat and bran • Soft drinks and fruit drinks • Milk and milk products, such as cheese and ice cream, and packaged foods prepared with lactose if you are lactose intolerant • Foods containing sorbitol, such as diet foods and sugar-free candies and gums How to avoid or reduce bloating? Some simple changes in your daily lifestyle and dietary habits can add to relief. Lifestyle Changes • Eat slowly in a relaxed environment and chew your food well • Avoid smoking • Exercise. Physical activity, especially in the morning before breakfast prevents the build-up of gas and encourages bowel activity • Avoid stress. Stress can hinder digestion in many ways Dietary Changes High-fibre foods can cause you some discomfort and bloating especially if you do not eat them regularly. Since they are very important for a healthy digestive system, it is recommended to slowly increase the fibre intake in your diet to allow your body to adjust to them. You can get fibre from fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. Other dietary guidelines to reduce bloating are: • Eat one serving of cultured yogurt daily • Drink plenty of water daily • Avoid caffeine. It acts as a stimulant and can overexcite your digestive system • Stay away from carbonated beverages • Ginger, fennel and peppermint tea are excellent digestive aids to enjoy with or after a meal. • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables daily • If you are lactose intolerant, avoid normal milk and go for soy milk that is fortified with calcium and vitamin D, and consume dairy products in moderation • Avoid high-fat foods because they are hard to digest Tip: If a certain food causes you discomfort, try to avoid it. Cooking Tip Soaking beans or legumes overnight and rinsing thoroughly before cooking may also help avoid bloating after eating them.
